Banana Fibre – The New Age Fibre
In the arena of fabrics, banana fibre, being completely natural, stands apart and is a definite winner. The parts of banana plant which was an agricultural waste in the past is now cultured and drawn into silk-grade yarns which is further handcrafted into beautiful products starting from sarees to table mats.
The use of banana fibre was first formally recorded in Kuk Valley of New Guinea, around 8000 B.C. It was one of the most used fibre until replaced by more convenient options like silk and cotton. Gradually with time the use of banana fibre faded away only to be revived and revamped now. The commercial value of banana fibre, across the world, is witnessing a manifold increase lately.
The Production Process
India being the largest producer of bananas in the world is seeing a surge in demand of products made out of banana fibre, thanks to all the ‘Save Our Planet’ campaigns. The extraction of banana fibre is an extensive, cumbersome, laborious and time consuming process. The end product is of superior finish.
The stems of the banana tree is mostly cut off and thrown away after the fruit is sold. The stems are then collected and the barks are removed. Barks are thoroughly cleaned and left under the sun to dry. After they are completely dry, they are drawn into handicrafts like coasters, mats, runners etc. The pseudo stems are then piled up in the processing unit and sliced into thin strands. Mostly water retting and scraping techniques are implemented and thin, ready to weave banana fibre is extracted and bundled into yarn. The yarns are weaved into sarees, robes, slips, evening wears etc. which give the most sustainable silk sarees a run for their money.
The bark has a rough texture like cotton, while the inner layer is soft and delicate like silk. Banana bark has a porous structure is high flexible and relatively water-resistant due to its natural wax coating that resists water droplets. It is the most durable natural, recyclable, reusable fibre that it can almost replace every synthetic fibre.
Today, banana fiber is used for many purposes all around the world and is gaining its lost luster. The first step towards a sustainable life is implementing natural fibres into your home and wardrobe and what could be a better choice than the revolutionary banana fibre.
